YOUTH ATTEND - Open
Door Youth Center's 12th Annual "Alternative Prom"
The Open Door Youth
Center recently held it's 12th Annual Open Door Youth Center Alternative
Prom. On Saturday, May 17th, over 60 GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual,
Transgender & Questioning) youth and their friends & allies flocked to the Unitarian
Universalist Church of Bloomington-Normal to participate in this yearly,
anticipated event.
This year's theme was, "A Night at the Movies: You're a Star!" From
the red carpet, to Hollywood backdrops, to funny GLBTQ movie clips, this year's
theme focuses on all things Hollywood! There was great food (thanks to
MCATF's Treasurer, Mark Robertson,
who is a Personal Chef - YUMMY!), plenty of 'movie-type' food &
treats, door prizes, gift bags(complete with ODYC info, HIV prevention
materials, condom safety packs, and important referral numbers). This
year, ODYC crowned both a King & Prince, as
well as Queen and Princess (there were crowns & gift certificates for the winners, of
course). Participants also got a chance to win great prizes for answering
questions correctly about HIV/AIDS & STD prevention.
A special thanks to Robyn, Lorraine, William, Jacqui, Linda, Trey
and everyone else for helping pass out flyers & brochures about the prom.
Thanks to our WONDERFUL adult volunteers, who made this event possible.
Open Door Youth Center is
open to youth 13 - 19 years old who identify as Gay / Queer / Down Low, Lesbian,
Bisexual, Transgender or are questioning their sexuality AND their supportive
friends and allies. ODYC is located in the Connections Community Center,
